Atomenergoproekt is the general designer of the Kudankulam NPP in India according to the Contract with JSC Atomstroyexport.
International contract for the development of working documentation for construction, erection and commissioning works as well as the contracts for manufacturing and delivery of equipment and materials for NPP buildings and structures was signed between the JSC Atomstroyexport and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL).
In case of hypothetical situation with core melting, the Kudankulam NPP is equipped with a molten core catcher, which is located under the reactor pressure vessel.
The main advantage of the NPP with the new generation reactor compared with Russian designs of previous generations is the use of advanced equipment and introduction of additional passive safety systems in a combination with conventional active systems, which increases the Kudankulam NPP reliability.
The Kudankulam NPP site is located on the coast of the Gulf of Mannar, 25 km to the north-east from the town of Knyakumari in the State of Tamil Nadu.
